About Redfern Sydney 2016
Redfern is located in the Inner City region of Sydney; it is situated 3 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Redfern is located in the Marrickville and Heffron state electorates and has a population of 12,035 people. The suburbs surrounding Redfern are: Chippendale, Central, Surry Hills, Darlington, Moore Park, Eveleigh, Alexandria and Waterloo.
Redfern was named for William Redfern, a surgeon, who in 1817, was granted 100 acres of land in the area. The Redfern area has significant meaning to the Indigenous people of Australia because it is the location of ‘the Block’ which was the first ever urban Aboriginal community housing project.
Though Redfern has a high concentration of poverty, it has also seen significant gentrification in recent years, particularly in the Eastern Redfern area, which has seen significant development in the last few years.
Redfern is known for its sporting culture. It is home to the Redfern All Blacks, one of the oldest Aboriginal rugby league teams in Australia, as well as the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Redfern Gym, which was established in 1985, is also well known for training many world champion boxers.
